Legal and Family Support
Guardianship

Did you know that when a child turns 18 years old, regardless of whether they have a developmental disability or not, the child becomes their own legal guardian unless a family member or advocate has specifically applied for and been approved for guardianship though the New York State court system? Just because someone is diagnosed with a developmental disability and receives services, guardianship is not automatic!

When an individual experiencing a developmental disability is not able to independently manage their daily life, Coarc's Advocacy and Legal Department can assist family members and advocates pursue guardianship both with information and legal assistance.
